Caulerpa prolifera is a popular, fast-growing green macroalgae (single-celled organism) used in saltwater aquariums for its resemblance to seagrass, providing hiding spots for small marine life like seahorses and copepods, and helping control nuisance algae by consuming nutrients. Small versions or fragments are often sold, growing from runners (stolons) on sandy bottoms, but can become invasive, requiring trimming or light deprivation if left unchecked, especially in areas where it's banned like California, where it's a concern.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Bright green, flat blades resembling freshwater Valisneria or seagrass, growing from a central runner.
- Growth: Spreads via runners (stolons) along the substrate (sand/mud).
- Size: Blades typically 6-15 cm tall; runners can grow over a meter long.
- Habitat: Prefers sandy substrates; doesn't usually grow on rocks/corals.
- Function in Aquariums: Acts as a habitat for copepods/amphipods, food/cover for fish, and nutrient exporter.
Management in Aquariums
- Trimming: Regular trimming (every few weeks) prevents overgrowth and sporulation (releasing spores).
- Clumping: Break into small clumps to limit sporulation impact.
- Lighting: Can be grown with lower light (2W/gallon) but needs nutrients; 24/7 lighting might reduce sexual reproduction.
- Containment: Keep in refugiums or tanks where its spread can be controlled; avoid introducing if banned in your area.
